Health Services Research with Herbal Medicinal Products

Herbal medicinal products are used almost exclusively in self-medication. In order to record patients’ experiences with herbal medicinal products, Kooperation Phytopharmaka has launched the “PhytoVIS Experience Database” project with the aim of collecting data on the benefits of patients under everyday conditions.
PhytoVIS is an abbreviation and stands for trust, information and safety in the use of herbal medicines. It is a database with anonymized health care research data. In cooperation with the Institute for Medical Statistics, Informatics and Epidemiology at the University of Cologne, an online questionnaire was developed and surveys were conducted in pharmacies and doctors’ practices. PhytoVIS thus makes an important contribution to health care research in the field of herbal medicinal products.
The project was launched in 2013 and finalized in 2017, after the intended number of 20.000 participants had been reached. After a large number of scientific studies have been conducted based on these data, the data acquisition will be restarted in 2026 as PhytoVIS 2.0.
PhytoVIS – Previous Project
The data base of the project PhytoVIS 1.0 was built in 2013. After the finalization of a pilot phase in 2014, data were captured until 2017.
The project is accessible via the EMA/ENCePP’s electronic study register. The framework conditions for PhytoVIS 1.0 can be found in the statutes (pdf, German language only). You can download the questionnaire for the previous project here (pdf, German language only).
So far, among others, the following project proposals have been submitted to and accepted by the PhytoVIS review group of the Science Working Group of Kooperation Phytopharmaka within the framework of this project:
| Title | Status | Project partner |
|---|---|---|
| Phytotherapeutika in der Spontanberichtserfassung (in German) | accepted | Prof. Dr. Werner Knöss University of Bonn |
| Beeinflussen Multimorbidität und Polypharmazie den CGI-E Score unter Anwendern pflanzlicher Arzneimittel über 75 Jahre? (in German) | accepted | Prof. Dr. med. Oliver Razum Supervisor Master Thesis |
Scientific institutions can submit project proposals to Kooperation Phytopharmaka and carry out evaluations in the database. The sample of a project application is available on request from Kooperation Phytopharmaka.
